Design Diary: Week 4

Tuesday-June 23rd
Today I filled out the pricing for fabric books we ordered in. The books can be viewed by clients so I have to calculate the retail cost per yard as to protect our wholesale cost.  We are constantly getting in books, catalogs, memos, and shipments and part of my daily tasks is the log the information and make sure everything is put up in an organized way. Next I picked out lighting fixtures for the spa like bathroom we are working on from Curryhttp://www.curreycodealers.com/default.aspx and Progress http://progresslighting.comlighting. This is for a master bath and we needed a chandelier type fixture for the entry. We decided on the lantern style and I picked out two options (based on two different color schemes).

I then started on the huge project of completely updating price lists and catalog listings in the server. Amy had a list off all the companies she had pricing and catalogs for (although it was outdated) and my job was to go through every catalog and price list and see what things had been added or what we had new information on.
Wednesday-June 24th
The morning was spent continuing my catalog and price list project. Though this project is extensive and somewhat monotonous I have learned price points for several companies and have added lots of new companies to my mental library of resources. While I was working on this, I listened in to a client meeting. I thought it was particularly interesting how Amy and Clay worded things to make "convince" the client of certain decisions or persuade them to a idea. In the end, the client makes decisions based on their price point and taste, but a lot of psychology is involved in understanding the client and presenting things to them they didn't know they liked. We actually visited the clients house this afternoon and delivered some light fixtures that were ready to be installed. Sechrest is redoing their entire house and it was cool to be on the job site, construction and all, and see lots of details that we have been working on coming together. The house and neighborhood is beautiful and the complete remodel will be fabulous. Wish I could have taken pictures, but I didn't out of respect for the clients privacy.
Thursday-June 25th
Continued working on the large catalog update project and i'm almost finished! The next step is taking all the information i've gathered and entering it onto the online server. We had another client meeting today with the "spa bath" redo. The meeting was very lengthy as they asked about every little detail but finally decisions can be made on certain finishes and construction can begin. One thing that I find fascinating about the daily life of an interior designer is how they manage to stay organized and keep up to date with all their projects. I know I have difficulty in school keeping track of the many different design projects because there are just so many details and this is even more with real clients because of budget constraint, reliance on reps/sub contractors, and client input. Organization and communication is key for developing the best design in quick timespan. Next I picked out some options of wall paper that were cream toned neutrals from Thibaut and some broom trim to coordinate with pillows we are having fabricate. It's hard to believe that I only have 1 week left of this experience to achieve the hours needed.  Everyday I learn something new and it is great to be around people who speak the same "language" as myself.
