Design Diary: Week 5
Tuesday: June 30th
Today I worked really hard on finishing the large catalog/price list update project. Amy and I went through the list and pulled catalogs that were no longer valid or updated. I also updated all of this information on the server so know we have a current listing of all available catalogs and pricing sheets and know what resources need updating. I also logged shipments we got in and put up samples that were no longer needed from a client meeting. The day to day life of a designer is really not all that glamorous- definitely nothing like the HGTV portrays the title. However, I enjoy even the little tasks related to design because they stimulate my creative passion and excite me about my future career.
Wednesday: July 1st
First event of the morning was meeting with a Rep from WallQuest, a Designer wall covering company. http://www.wallquest.com. It was awesome to see how many different options exist for wall covering: there truly is something for everyone. Some people take some convincing when it comes to wall paper because the "statement", old fashioned, or pain in the butt perspectives. WallQuest offers mostly mid-price point wall coverings that include modern geometrics, traditional motifs, and even grasscloth or embellished wall coverings. Next task was to remove old tile from a drywall piece. The client wanted to save her old tile for sentimental reasons so I broke a sweat in the 90 degree weather to remove and restore the old tile pieces. Wish I would have taken a picture of the process because it was quite amusing I'm sure to see me pounding on old drywall and mortar with a broken screwdriver. Next we picked out an upholstery fabric for a sofa. We were looking through Hickory Chair's upholstery swatches and I learned that it is significantly more cost effective to upholster a piece in fabric made by the furniture manufacture. The downside is less pattern and color way options. I finished the day by cleaning around the office: dusting all the antiques and fabric books. Because this was my last official day, Amy and I discussed the progress on current client projects that I have been working on and she promised to keep my updated on the status of these projects. I am so sad it was my last day and I officially have the 75 hours needed for class credit. This has been a great learning experience and I am so thankful for the opportunity. A full reflection will be posted soon.
